As a pet photographer one of the biggest reservations I hear is, “My dog can’t be off leash.”
So you might think that leashes are the ultimate dealbreaker when it comes to getting that perfect pet photo. Who wants that distracting thing in the shot, right?
Well, here’s my hot take: leashes are NOT the problem.
I know, I know—it’s a little controversial, but hear me out.
Leashes: A Necessary Tool for Safety
The reality is, most dogs—around 90% of them, in fact—can’t be off-leash during a photo session. Why? Leash laws, safety concerns, and the simple fact that dogs are unpredictable. As much as I love capturing those spontaneous moments, safety is my top priority. I’m not about to risk a runaway pup just to get a wall-worthy shot. And when it comes to your dog’s safety, a leash is an essential part of the process.
The Magic Happens in the Editing
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “But I don’t want to see the leash in my photos! It ruins the aesthetic!” And I totally get it. It can be a little jarring to see a leash or collar when you’re dreaming of that perfect, unobstructed shot. But here’s the thing—this is where the magic of editing comes into play.
Sure, it takes a little more time on the “back end” of the session. But, for me, that’s when I get to pull up my favorite crime podcast and dive into Photoshop to work my editing magic. Over the years, I’ve mastered the art of leash removal, and let me tell you: the results are seamless. Seriously—even action shots! I can remove the leash so that you get that epic shot you’ve been dreaming of, without the leash or collar stealing the spotlight.
It’s Not About Faking the Moment, It’s About Enhancing It
Now, I can already hear some of the purists saying, “But editing out a leash makes the photo less authentic!” And I get it, I really do. But here’s the thing: Photoshop isn’t about faking a moment; it’s about enhancing it. It’s about removing distractions and highlighting the real joy in your pet’s face.
That excitement? That happiness? 1000% real. The joy in your dog’s eyes isn’t any less authentic just because we removed a leash. What I’m doing is giving you a photo that truly represents the essence of that moment, without anything else getting in the way.
At the end of the day, your dog’s safety and comfort come first. And if a leash makes it safer for them during a photo session, then it’s a tool I’ll always embrace. And with the magic of editing, I can deliver a final image that’s just as stunning and authentic as you imagined it to be—without the distraction of a leash.
So, next time you’re looking to book a photo session with your pup, don’t worry about the leash. If you have an experienced pet photographer on deck, it won’t be the thing standing between you and the perfect shot. Trust me on this one.
